Factor Line Sudoku (PuzzleMadness)
A sudoku with lines from a circle: every digit on the line must divide the circled digit exactly.
Every day: A new dated Factor Line Sudoku puzzle every day at each difficulty (Easy, Medium, Hard and Tough, plus a Mixed page), the same for every player, with scores on monthly and all-time leaderboards and earlier days in the archive. New puzzle: Once a day (the site does not state the time).

Factor Line Sudoku on PuzzleMadness is a 9x9 sudoku with grey lines that each start at a circle. Every digit along a line has to be a factor of the digit in its circle, dividing into it with no remainder. A new grid is published every day from Easy to Tough.
About Factor Line Sudoku (PuzzleMadness)
Every row, column and 3x3 box holds 1 to 9 once each, as usual. Each Factor line has a circle at one end, and every other cell on the line must contain a factor of the circled digit. Within 1 to 9 the factors are short lists: 1 has only 1, a prime such as 5 or 7 has 1 and itself, 4 has 1, 2 and 4, 6 has 1, 2, 3 and 6, 8 has 1, 2, 4 and 8, and 9 has 1, 3 and 9. A line need not use every factor, and the rules page lists them for reference.
Since a digit can only repeat on a line when the cells are in different rows, columns and boxes, a long line needs a circle with plenty of factors, which in practice means 6 or 8 in the circle and lots of 1s, 2s, 3s and 4s along the line. The digits 5 and 7 can only appear on a line whose circle holds the same digit, and such a line can only hold 1s and that same digit.
The grid works like every sudoku on PuzzleMadness: number buttons above and below it, an eraser, and a pencil mode for candidate digits. On a keyboard, the number keys enter digits, the arrow keys move between cells, Ctrl, Shift or Alt with a number adds a pencil mark, and Delete or Backspace clears a cell.
PuzzleMadness is a free puzzle website run by Dewi, a software developer who started out making games for the PlayStation 2, Nintendo Wii and DS and now builds the site as a hobby. It carries dozens of puzzle types, from classic sudoku to newer logic grids, and each one gets its own dated puzzle every day at each difficulty. Factor Line Sudoku comes in Easy, Medium, Hard and Tough versions plus a Mixed page, and the same day's Factor Line Sudoku puzzle is shared by everyone who opens it.
The site checks your grid as you go and tells you when it is finished; it does not publish solutions. Each completed puzzle earns a score, and scores feed a monthly and an all-time Factor Line Sudoku leaderboard, where only your best attempt at a puzzle counts. Older days stay in the archive, so a missed puzzle can still be played later and still counts toward the current month. Playing needs no account; a free registration gives you a username on the leaderboards and a cloud save. The pages carry adverts.
How to play Factor Line Sudoku (PuzzleMadness)
- Open today's Factor Line Sudoku page on PuzzleMadness and choose a difficulty from the menu above the grid.
- Click a cell and enter a digit with the number buttons above and below the grid or with the keyboard; the eraser button clears a cell.
- Fill every row, column and 3x3 box with the digits 1 to 9, each once.
- On each line, make every digit a factor of the digit in the line's circle (it must divide into it with no remainder).
- Turn on pencil mode (the pencil button, or Ctrl, Shift or Alt with a number key) to jot candidate digits in a cell.
- The site tells you when the grid is complete and adds your score; registered players appear on the leaderboards.
Tips
- 5, 7 and 9 are rare on lines: 5 and 7 only appear where the circle holds 5 or 7, and 9 only where it holds 9.
- Long lines point to a 6 or 8 in the circle, since those have four factors each.
- 1 divides everything, so 1s are a natural fit for factor lines; place them early.
- Missed a day? Earlier puzzles are in the archive, and finishing one still counts toward this month's leaderboard.
Questions
Does a Factor line have to include every factor of its circle?
No. Every digit on the line must be a factor of the circled digit, but the line does not need to contain all of them.
When does a new Factor Line Sudoku puzzle appear?
Once a day: each difficulty gets its own dated puzzle. PuzzleMadness does not state the exact changeover time.
Where can I see the solution?
PuzzleMadness does not publish solutions. The page tells you when your grid is correct and finished, or when you have made a mistake.
Is Factor Line Sudoku on PuzzleMadness free?
Yes. It is free to play in a browser with adverts on the page, and registering for the leaderboards is free too.
