Conexus is a free daily grouping puzzle in Latin from the online dictionary latindictionary.io. Each day's grid holds 16 Latin words that split into four categories of four; you find them with four mistakes allowed, and each category is shown in Latin with an English translation.

About Conexus (latindictionary.io)

Conexus brings the Connections format to Latin. Each puzzle has four categories with four words each, mixed in a four by four grid. On one October day the grid held future participles such as dicturus, facturus and scripturus, Roman magistrates such as consul, praetor and censor, words for the sea such as pontus, pelagus and aequor, and words built on the root of seeing such as speculum and spectaculum, with each set laid to trap the others.

You select four words and tap Submit. A right guess reveals the category, given in Latin with its English translation; a wrong one costs one of four mistakes, and the game tells you when a guess is close. Shuffle and Deselect All help when the grid gets stuck, and any word can be looked up in the Latin dictionary from the game.

The site describes it as a way for Latin students, classics enthusiasts and anyone who likes word puzzles to practise vocabulary. There is one puzzle per calendar day, the same for everyone on the same date, and a new one at midnight on your own clock. It is free, needs no account, and sits beside the site's Latin Wordle.

How to play Conexus (latindictionary.io)

  1. Open Conexus and read the day's 16 Latin words.
  2. Select four words that you think share a category.

  4. Use Shuffle to rearrange the grid, and look up any word you do not know in the dictionary.
  5. Find all four groups before you make four mistakes.

Tips

  • Look at endings as well as meanings: a set of participles or one declension can be a category of its own.
  • Words from the same root, such as spectare, often form a group, but one of them may belong elsewhere.
  • Use the dictionary link for any unknown word before you spend a mistake on it.
