Title on iPhone: Name the book from its first line, with puzzle 0010's opening line from Pride and Prejudice and six titles to choose from

Title is a daily book-guessing game from Reno Labs. Each day's puzzle is a public-domain classic: you see its opening line and six possible titles, and can reveal up to five more clues, each costing a guess. It plays in the browser and as an iPhone app.

About Title

Title builds each puzzle from a book in the public-domain library, the classics of authors such as Austen, Conan Doyle, Mary Shelley and Dostoevsky. The first clue is the opening line, and below it six titles to choose from. If you are not sure, you can reveal the next clue, drawn from the book's text and its catalogue details such as the author and subjects, but each reveal uses one of your six guesses.

The game is styled like a galley proof, the marked-up pages an editor corrects before printing, with proof marks and a stamp when you solve it. After the day's book you get a share card and stats: the day's histogram, your win percentage and your streak, and the next day you can see how others did on yesterday's book. The free tier also has unlimited Play Another extras.

Title was made by Reno Labs, a studio in Menlo Park, California, and came to the App Store in 2026. A Title Pro subscription removes ads and adds a profile of your solving habits and a Classic Mysteries collection; the daily puzzle itself is free. The same daily is playable on the web without the app.

How to play Title

  1. Open Title in the browser or the iPhone app and read the opening line.
  2. Pick one of the six titles if you know the book.
  3. If not, reveal the next clue; each reveal uses one of your six guesses.
  4. Keep reading clues and guessing until you name the book or run out of guesses.
  5. Share your result card and come back for the next book.

Tips

  • Read the six options before revealing anything: you can often rule out books by period or style.
  • Opening lines of famous novels are well known; save your reveals for the less familiar ones.
  • The author clue usually narrows the six titles to one or two, so it is worth its guess.
  • Use Play Another on the app to practise on more classics.
