About Sudoku (The Herald)
The Herald runs a puzzles hub at heraldscotland.com/puzzles with its crosswords (Quick, Standard, Cryptic, General Knowledge and the Wee Stinker), a wordsearch, a codeword, a colour sudoku, a jigsaw and the classic sudoku. The sudoku comes in four levels a day: Very Easy, which anyone can play, and Easy, Medium and Hard, which sit among the subscriber-only puzzles.
Each grid is filed under its date (Sudoku Very Easy, 5th October 2026, for example) and carries a note saying how many days it stays available, about 27. The hub lists the last few weeks of grids at each level, so a reader who missed a day can go back to it.
The board is a standard 9x9 grid played in the browser. You select a cell and tap a number on the keypad beside the grid; a pencil button switches to notes, and a Del key clears a cell. A timer runs below the keypad, and the grid highlights the row, column and box of the cell you are on.
It suits Herald readers who already do its crosswords and want a number puzzle beside them, and anyone after a free, easy daily grid with a step up to harder ones for subscribers.
How to play Sudoku (The Herald)
- Open the puzzles hub on The Herald and choose Sudoku at the level you want; Very Easy is free.
- Pick today's dated grid, or an earlier one from the list.
- Select an empty cell and tap a number from 1 to 9 on the keypad.
- Use the pencil button to add notes, and Del to clear a cell.
- Fill the grid so every row, column and 3x3 box holds 1 to 9 once.
Tips
- Start on Very Easy to learn the keypad and notes before trying the subscriber levels.
- Scan each 3x3 box for the digit it is missing most often.
- Use notes on Hard grids to track the two or three candidates left in a cell.
- Grids stay up for about four weeks, so a missed day can still be played.
