Story Sleuth is a free daily book puzzle from Book Sleuth Club. You see a short, vague summary of a book's plot and have six guesses to name it from a searchable list; each wrong guess brings you closer to extra clues.

About Story Sleuth

Story Sleuth is the first game from Book Sleuth Club, a small site of daily puzzles for book lovers. Each day has one numbered puzzle, dated and the same for every player, built around a single book.

The puzzle starts with a deliberately vague one-line summary, such as "A young girl follows an animal". You pick your guess from a searchable list of titles and have six attempts. Wrong guesses unlock help in stages: the decade of publication after three misses, the author's initials after four, and the pattern of the title's words after five. You can also spend a guess to reveal the next clue early, or give up and reveal the book.

A Library Card page tracks the books you have named, how many guesses each took, reader titles you earn as you pass milestones, and hidden stamps to discover. A Library section and a Practice Edition give you more to play, and a guide explains the rules.

It suits readers who like testing how well they know famous plots, from children's classics to modern novels.

How to play Story Sleuth

  1. Read the day's one-line summary of a book.
  2. Type to search the list of titles and pick your guess.
  3. After wrong guesses, use the unlocked decade, author's initials and title pattern clues.
  4. Name the book within six guesses.

Tips

  • Think of the most famous book that fits the summary first: the summaries are vague on purpose.
  • If you are unsure, consider spending a guess to unlock the next clue sooner.
  • The title pattern clue shows word lengths, which can settle close calls.
