Spoondle

Spoondle title card: You'll get it spooner or plater

Spoondle is a free daily word game built on spoonerisms. You put one word from each column on the mat and trade a tile between them; when the swap is right, the two words turn into an answer such as a phrase, a name or a single word split in two.

About Spoondle

Spoondle takes the idea of the spoonerism and turns it into a tile puzzle. The board holds two columns of short words. You place one word from each column onto a mat, then swap a single tile between them. If the pair is right, the swap reveals an answer: DOOM and RAT become DOORMAT, ROB and BOSS become BOB ROSS. Each day's board hides four answers.

Answers come in three kinds. Words and phrases are ordinary words or expressions, proper nouns are names, places, brands and titles, and sneaky splits are single words broken somewhere unexpected. Some answers read backwards once the tiles are swapped, and when a pairing goes nowhere the help suggests replacing one of the two words. A hint lights up a tile that wants to move, and a peek tells you whether the tiles you just tried belong in a swap. You can play against the clock in timer mode or switch to relax mode.

Spoondle is made by Zack Abrams and started its daily run in September 2026. A new board arrives at midnight on your device, earlier boards stay in a monthly archive, and progress and stats stay in your browser. There are no accounts and no ads. It suits players who like wordplay and saying words out loud more than guessing letters.

How to play Spoondle

  1. Pick one word from each column and place both on the mat.
  2. Swap one tile between the two words to see whether they form an answer.
  3. Read the result both ways, since some answers read backwards.
  4. If a pair goes nowhere, replace one of the words and try again.
  5. Find all four answers; use a hint or a peek if you are stuck.

Tips

  • Say the words out loud; spoonerisms are easier to hear than to see.
  • Think about famous names and places as well as ordinary phrases.
  • If two short words will not work as a phrase, try them as halves of one longer word.
  • Relax mode takes the clock away if you would rather not race.
