Slate's daily quiz is a short set of trivia questions on one theme, posted every morning at 6 a.m. Eastern and written by Ray Hamel. The themes change from day to day, from science to history to culture, and on Fridays a news quiz tests what you caught that week.

About Slate Daily Quiz

Slate's quiz is part of the magazine's small group of daily games, next to its crossword, mini, Pears and SoundBites. A new quiz goes up every morning at 6 a.m. Eastern as a dated post, and each one sticks to a single subject named in its title: a science quiz one day, history or culture the next.

The daily quizzes are written by Ray Hamel, and their headlines usually pose one of the questions, such as which vitamin a lack of causes scurvy, or which of Henry VIII's six wives he was married to longest. You answer in the post itself and see your result at the end.

On Fridays Slate adds a news quiz on the week's events, framed as a challenge to beat one of the magazine's editors. Every quiz is free to play in the browser with ads on the page, and past ones collect on the quizzes tag page. It suits players who like a short general knowledge round with a clear theme rather than a random mix.

How to play Slate Daily Quiz

  1. Open the day's Slate quiz, posted at 6 a.m. Eastern.
  2. Read the theme in the title and answer each question in turn.
  3. See your score when you finish.
  4. On Fridays, try the weekly news quiz as well.
  5. Use the quizzes page to play earlier days.

Tips

  • The headline question is in the quiz, so think about it before you start.
  • Theme days reward specialists; if science is not your field, take the history or culture days as your chance.
