Sanapyramidi is a daily Finnish word game from Yle, the Finnish public broadcaster. You sort the day's words into four groups of different sizes that share a hidden link, and each solved group becomes a layer of a pyramid. One word belongs to no group and ends up on top.

About Sanapyramidi (Yle)

Sanapyramidi is a word-grouping puzzle published on yle.fi, the website of the Finnish public broadcaster Yle. It is in Finnish and is made by Yle Oppiminen, Yle's learning department. A new pyramid comes out every morning, and Yle also runs a Swedish-language version called Ordpyramiden.

Each day you get a set of words to sort into four groups. Unlike puzzles where every group has four members, the groups here have two, three, four and five words, and each group shares something: a category, a kind of word or another link. One word fits none of the groups and becomes the tip of the pyramid.

You select the words you think belong together and press Tarkista (check). A correct row slides into its layer of the pyramid, and you can solve the rows in any order. Four wrong guesses end the game. If you are stuck, the Vihje (hint) button reveals the first word of the lowest unsolved row, for the five, four and three word rows only.

The mix of group sizes changes the logic: a short group of two is easy to overlook, and the leftover word means you cannot finish by elimination alone. It suits Finnish speakers and learners who like Connections-style puzzles and want a short morning challenge. You can play without logging in, or sign in with a Yle account.

How to play Sanapyramidi (Yle)

  1. Open the Sanapyramidi page on yle.fi and start today's pyramid (logging in is optional).
  2. Tap the words you think share a link; tap a word again to deselect it.
  3. Press Tarkista to check the row; a correct group drops into its layer of the pyramid.
  4. Keep going until the groups of two, three, four and five words are found and one word is left for the top.
  5. Avoid four wrong answers, which end the game; use Vihje if you need the first word of the lowest open row.

Tips

  • Look for the five-word group first: it is the biggest and often the easiest link to spot.
  • Remember that one word belongs to no group, so a word that seems to fit nowhere may be the top of the pyramid.
  • A hint word still has to be selected by hand along with the rest of its row.
