Sakuin Tango is a daily Japanese word game on Puzzlega.me. You type a five-kana word, and the game shows whether the answer comes before or after it in gojūon (a-i-u-e-o) order, narrowing the range between two words. A distance figure tells you how close you are.

About Sakuin Tango (索引たんご, Puzzlega.me)

Sakuin Tango (roughly 'index words') is a Japanese daily puzzle from the Puzzlega.me collection. Each day there is one hidden five-kana word, the same for everyone, and a new one is released at midnight Japan time.

Instead of letter colours, the game works like flicking through a dictionary. When you enter a word, the answer's position is narrowed between two blue panels, one word above it and one below in gojūon order, and a figure shows the distance between your guess and the answer as a share of the remaining range, so a smaller number means closer. The help explains how kana are ordered: voiced and small kana sort as their plain forms, and a long-vowel mark counts as the preceding vowel.

If you give up, the answer is shown and you cannot play again that day. A separate Taboo survival mode adds banned characters after every solved word, and a portal page keeps results and answers for past puzzles.

It suits Japanese speakers and learners who enjoy before-or-after word hunts like Guess My Word.

How to play Sakuin Tango (索引たんご, Puzzlega.me)

  1. Type any five-kana word in hiragana as your guess.
  2. See where the answer sits: between the words shown above and below in kana order.
  3. Read the distance figure to judge how close you are.
  4. Guess again inside the narrowed range until you find the word.

Tips

  • Start with a word from the middle of the kana order to halve the range.
  • Remember voiced and small kana sort as plain kana.
  • Watch the distance figure, which shrinks as you close in.
