Two handcrafted word puzzles a day, in an app styled after the 1970s.

Every day: Two handcrafted word puzzles every day, the same for every player: a Spellotron (make words from seven letters and find the pangram) and a Wordway (build a bridge of words from one word to another). Today's two are free; a subscription opens the past week. New puzzle: Once a day; the game does not say at what hour.

Retrogram is a word puzzle app for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, dressed in 1970s rainbows and soft serifs. Every day it has two new handcrafted puzzles: Spellotron, where you make as many words as you can from seven letters and hunt for the pangram, and Wordway, where you build a bridge of words from one word to another. Today's puzzles are free and the app has no ads.

About Retrogram

Retrogram is made by in Color and came to the App Store in January 2022. Its look is a love letter to the 1970s: cream backgrounds, rainbow stripes and rounded serif type, with a Neon Nites dark theme and vintage app icons for subscribers. It runs on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch and syncs your game between them.

The first daily puzzle is Spellotron. Seven letters sit in a flower of circles and you make as many words as you can from them, aiming to find the pangram that uses every letter and to climb the ranks as your score grows. Some words come with a note on their story or meaning, and an answer list shows the day's words with the ones you found ticked. Each day's puzzle carries its date and the names of the people who made it.

The second is Wordway: you are given a start word, an end word and a set of letters, and you build a bridge of words across the board from one to the other.

Both of today's puzzles are free, with no ads. A subscription lets you catch up on the past seven days, opens a Puzzle Vault of bonus puzzles and limited-edition packs, and adds the dark theme. SharePlay lets friends solve together over FaceTime. It suits players of Spelling Bee who want a second daily word puzzle in the same place.

How to play Retrogram

  1. Open Retrogram and tap Play on the day's puzzle.
  2. In Spellotron, tap letters from the seven in the flower to spell a word and submit it with the arrow.
  3. Keep making words to raise your score and climb the ranks, and look for the pangram that uses all seven letters.
  4. In Wordway, use the letters you are given to build a path of words from the start word to the end word.
  5. Check the answer list to see the words you missed, and come back the next day to keep your streak.

Tips

  • Shuffle the letters when you stall: a new arrangement shows words you missed.
  • Add common endings such as ING, ER and ED to words you have already found.
  • Look for the pangram early: it is usually the biggest score of the day.
  • Read the answer list after you finish to learn words you will see again.
