Punnett Squareword #684: four squares, each with two coloured dots and a clue such as Second Thoughts and Mastered

Punnett Squareword lays out a grid like a Punnett square from biology class. Each square is a two-word phrase or compound, shown as two coloured dots with a clue in brackets, and a colour means the same word wherever it appears. Solve all four squares with three wrong guesses allowed and hints if needed.

About Punnett Squareword

Punnett Squareword borrows the look of the Punnett square from school biology. The day's grid has four squares, and each square holds a two-word phrase or compound word, drawn as two coloured dots with a short clue in brackets underneath. A colour always stands for the same word, wherever it turns up in the grid.

That shared colour is the key to the puzzle. The game's own example is a square with two dots and the clue (Audibly), which could be Out Loud; if another square shares one of those colours, its phrase must contain the same word, so each square you solve narrows down the others. The clues are definitions of the phrase, not the phrase itself: on 2 October 2026, puzzle number 684, they were Second Thoughts, Without Hesitation, Mastered and Starting Play.

You type an answer under each clue and submit the grid. You have three guesses in all, and hints if you get stuck. The puzzle is numbered and dated, the same for everyone, and when you finish you can share your result. The game was made by Ruden Design LLC in 2024, and players can send in puzzle ideas through its Contribute button.

It suits players who like Connections-style word links and compound-word chains, and want something that takes a few minutes.

Tips

  • Start with the clue you are surest of: its two words give you two colours for the other squares.
  • Look for squares that share a colour and think of words that fit both phrases.
  • Compound words count, so try joining the two words as well as keeping them apart.
