PoopGuessr card: a mystery creature with a question mark beside a pile of droppings in a stylised forest

PoopGuessr shows you one photo of wild animal scat a day and gives you six guesses to name the animal. Each guess is compared with the answer on class, diet, habitat, region and size. After the round you get facts about the animal and the photo credit.

About PoopGuessr

PoopGuessr is a daily wildlife puzzle built on an old tracking skill: telling animals apart by their droppings. Each day you get a single photo of real scat from the wild, and everyone sees the same one.

You type an animal as your guess, and a row of clue cells compares it with the mystery animal on class, diet, habitat, region and typical adult size. Green is a match, yellow a partial overlap and red no match, and arrows show whether the answer is heavier or lighter. You can zoom into the photo to check size, shape and contents, and you have six guesses.

The photos are open-license images, mostly from Wikimedia Commons, with credits shown after each round so the caption never gives the answer away. A field guide covers how to identify every animal in the game, and an archive keeps every past day playable. The idea comes from a poop-guessing segment on the Swedish children's TV show Myror i brallan.

It suits nature fans, hikers and anyone who likes Wordle-style comparison clues with a slightly odd subject.

How to play PoopGuessr

  1. Study the day's photo, zooming in on size, shape and contents.
  2. Type the animal you think left it.
  3. Read the clue cells for class, diet, habitat, region and size.
  4. Use the colours and the heavier or lighter arrow to narrow it down.
  5. Name the animal within six guesses.

Tips

  • Size is the quickest filter: big pellets and small pellets point to very different animals.
  • Look for fur, seeds or fish bones in the droppings, which hint at diet.
  • Read the field guide after a round to get better at the signs.
