Motplot is a daily crossword without clues. Instead of answering definitions, you are handed letters and have to plot each one into the right spot so that real words form across and down. There is a 5x5 Mini Mot every day on the web and a 6x6 Max Mot in the mobile app, and the game is free with no ads.

About Motplot

Motplot calls itself a sudoku for words. Each puzzle is a small crossword grid, but there are no clues: the game gives you the next letter and you plot it into the next available position of a word, building the grid by logic and vocabulary alone. Get it wrong too often and the puzzle is lost, since you may not make more than four mistakes.

Every day brings a new Mini Mot (5x5), playable in the browser, and a new Max Mot (6x6), which the website points to the mobile app for. Puzzles are numbered from the first Motplot on 21 December 2023 and are the same for every player on a given day. After solving, the game shows definitions of the words, drawn from open dictionary data.

The app also holds the archive of every Mini and Max Mot published so far. The game is free and runs without ads.

It suits crossword fans who want something other than clue solving, sudoku players who like constraint puzzles, and anyone who enjoys word patterns.

How to play Motplot

  1. Open Motplot in the browser for today's Mini Mot.
  2. Look at the letter shown as the next letter.
  3. Plot it into the next available position of a word in the grid.
  4. Keep placing letters so every across and down entry becomes a real word.
  5. Fill the grid without making more than four mistakes.

Tips

  • Think about common letter patterns at word starts and ends before placing.
  • Vowels are precious in a small grid: place them where both crossing words need one.
  • If a letter fits two spots, consider which leaves more possible words.
  • Use the app for the larger 6x6 Max Mot once the Mini feels easy.
