Hidden Joey card showing BLOSSOM with the letters of BLOOM highlighted

Hidden Joey is built on kangaroo words, longer words that carry a shorter word of the same meaning inside them, such as BLOSSOM holding BLOOM. Each day has three rounds where you tap the hidden letters in order, sometimes after picking the right word from three. A short note on the word's history follows each answer.

About Hidden Joey

Hidden Joey is a daily word game that started in July 2026. Its name comes from the idea of kangaroo words: a word, like a mother kangaroo, carrying a joey that means the same thing, spelled with its letters in the right order but not always next to each other.

A day has three rounds. The first shows a single word, and later rounds can show three words, only one of which hides a joey. You tap letters from left to right to spell your answer, and each round gives a limited number of tries shown as tracks that fade as you miss. If you get stuck you can spend hints: the length of the joey, ruling out one of the wrong words, or a short clue. After each round a card explains the words, often tracing where they came from, and these cards are kept in a collection.

The puzzles feel closer to a word curiosity than a vocabulary test, and the history notes are a large part of the appeal. It suits people who enjoy etymology, cryptic-style wordplay and short games that teach something new, and the archive lets newcomers replay earlier days without touching their streak.

How to play Hidden Joey

  1. Press play to open the first of the day's three rounds.
  2. When a round shows several words, decide which one hides its own synonym.
  3. Tap letters from left to right to spell the hidden word; two or more letters make a guess.
  4. Watch your tries; a miss fades one track, and two misses on the same word rule it out.
  5. Use a hint if you need one (joey length, ruling out a word, or a clue), then read the fact card and move on.

Tips

  • Say the long word's meaning out loud, then look for a shorter word with that meaning inside it.
  • The hidden letters stay in order but can skip letters in between.
  • The length hint alone often narrows the search a lot, so try it before the clue.
