Cryptl is Quizl's daily cryptogram. Each day hides a quote or saying from a well-known person, and you fill in the missing letters using patterns in the words and what you have already worked out. You can reveal a letter when stuck, and your stats track streaks, times and hints used.

About Cryptl

Cryptl is a daily cryptogram on Quizl, a site of small daily puzzles. Each day hides one quote or saying, the same for everyone, written out as a code: every letter has been swapped for another, and the same swap runs through the whole quote.

You crack it by filling in letters. When you decide that a coded letter stands for, say, an E, every copy of that coded letter becomes E, so patterns like single-letter words, double letters and common endings give you a way in. If you get stuck you can reveal a letter, though your stats note how many hints you used.

The game keeps streaks and your best times, and the quote is drawn from a dated list so everyone decodes the same one on the same day. A How to Play screen explains the rules before you start.

It suits anyone who enjoys word patterns and the slow reveal of a cryptogram, in a quick daily that rewards spotting common letters.

How to play Cryptl

  1. Press Start Game on the day's Cryptl.
  2. Look at the coded quote, where each letter stands for a different one.
  3. Choose a substitution; every copy of that coded letter changes at once.
  4. Use short words, repeated letters and common patterns to work out the rest.
  5. Reveal a letter if you are stuck, and finish by decoding the whole quote.

Tips

  • Start with one-letter words: in English they are almost always A or I.
  • Look for apostrophes: the letter after one is often T, S, D or RE.
  • Common short words like THE and AND repeat often, so matching their letter patterns unlocks a lot at once.
