can-u-read? is a daily speed-reading game. Its daily run flashes seven sentences one word at a time, from 150 up to 1000 words per minute, and in each one a single word is green. You have ten seconds to type that word back, and every stage you get right keeps the run alive.

About can-u-read?

can-u-read? is a browser game built on rapid serial visual presentation, or RSVP: instead of a line of text, words appear one after another in the same spot, with one letter of each marked so your eye stays fixed. The main mode, Word Hunt, turns this into a daily test.

The daily run has seven stages, each faster than the last: 150, 300, 450, 600, 750, 900 and 1000 words per minute. In each stage a sentence flashes past, a short line about trains, space probes or the ocean, and exactly one of its words is shown in green. When the sentence ends you have ten seconds to type the green word and press Enter. A replay button lets you see the sentence again a limited number of times. The seven sentences and their green words are chosen from the date, so every player gets the same run that day, and the result can be shared as a row of green and red squares.

The site keeps a daily streak and an activity grid, saved in the browser or to an account if you sign in. Besides Word Hunt there is Speech Race, where you read the flashing sentence aloud into your microphone, and a Practice reader for any text at a chosen speed. The daily run is free; a Pro subscription adds more runs a day and higher speeds. The game is made by cleanpixels.

It suits players who want a one-minute test of attention rather than vocabulary, and anyone curious how fast they can read.

Tips

  • Keep your eyes on the marked letter in the middle; the words come to you, so do not chase them.
  • Green target words are usually the longer words of the sentence, so pay less attention to short ones like the and of.
  • Save your replays for the fast stages at 750 words per minute and above.
  • Spelling counts: type the word exactly as it flashed.
