BrainBashers, a long-running puzzle site, posts one dated brain teaser every day. It might be a word problem, a riddle or a piece of logic; you work it out on paper, then reveal a hint, the workings or the answer.

About BrainBashers Daily Puzzle

BrainBashers is a puzzle site made and run by Kevin Stone, known for its logic grids, sudoku variants and optical illusions. Its Daily Puzzle page shows one brain teaser each day, headed with the date.

The teasers vary: some are arithmetic word problems (a contest where the scores add up to a total and each player relates to the next), some are riddles, and some are short logic puzzles. There is no grid to fill in and no timer. You read the problem, work it out, and then use the buttons under it: a hint if you are stuck, the workings to see the method, and the answer to check yourself.

All of the site's daily items change at midnight GMT, and there is a time zone setting next to that notice. A weekly puzzle and many daily logic grids sit on the same site. It suits anyone who likes a pencil-and-paper puzzle with a coffee.

How to play BrainBashers Daily Puzzle

  1. Open the Daily Puzzle page and read the day's teaser.
  2. Work out the answer, on paper if it involves numbers.
  3. Press hint if you need a nudge.
  4. Check yourself with the answer, and read the workings to see the method.
  5. Come back after midnight GMT for the next one.

Tips

  • For word problems, write each sentence as an equation and use the total to solve for one unknown.
  • Read every word of a riddle: the trick is often in a phrase that seems to be padding.
  • Try the hint before the answer; the workings are more satisfying when you were close.
