Wordle in German: daily German word games

German players have several Wordles to choose from: the Süddeutsche Zeitung publishes the official Wordle auf Deutsch, WELT and the Tagesspiegel run their own five-letter word of the day, and independent sites add more. German papers also make daily versions of other word formats, from a German Connections to letter-ring puzzles.

The games

Start with the Süddeutsche Zeitung's Wordle auf Deutsch, the licensed German version: one dated five-letter word a day and six tries, free to play, with past days for subscribers. WELT's Wordle auf Deutsch works the same way, free with ads. The Tagesspiegel's Begriffel is hand-picked and numbered, with a short archive of recent days, and Wördle on wortsuchspiel.de and GridWords are free independent versions.

If five letters is not enough, Die Zeit's Wortiger gives you four German words a day, of four, five, six and seven letters, each with six tries; it needs a Zeit subscription.

For other formats, Spiegel's Viererkette is a German Connections: sort sixteen terms into four groups of four. The Tagesspiegel's Wortflip has you slide letter columns until four hidden words appear, and the Süddeutsche Zeitung's Buchstabenring asks you to chain words around a ring of letters until every letter is used. For a full crossword, the SZ publishes a numbered 15 by 15 Kreuzworträtsel every day for subscribers.

To begin, play the SZ or WELT Wordle and Begriffel side by side; they take two or three minutes each and are free.
