Wortagon is Der Tagesspiegel's daily German word game in the style of Spelling Bee. Make words of four letters or more from the seven letters in the honeycomb, always including the centre letter, and score points until you reach 80.

About Wortagon (Tagesspiegel)

Each day Wortagon gives you a honeycomb of seven letters with one in the middle. Every word you enter must have at least four letters and must contain the centre letter; the other letters can be used as often as you like. Swear words, proper names and regional words do not count, nouns go in their base form and verbs in the infinitive.

A four-letter word scores one point, and longer words score one point per letter. Every honeycomb hides at least one isogram, a word that uses each of the seven letters exactly once, worth ten points. The target is 80 points, and a top score shows how few words you could have needed to get there.

The puzzles are numbered and dated, so everyone works on the same honeycomb each day. A free login saves your progress across phone, tablet and computer.

It suits German speakers who play Spelling Bee in English and want the same daily routine in their own language.

How to play Wortagon (Tagesspiegel)

  1. Open Wortagon and look at the seven letters in the honeycomb.
  2. Type or tap a word of at least four letters that includes the centre letter.
  3. Submit it; valid words are added to your list and score points.
  4. Find the word that uses all seven letters for ten points.
  5. Keep going until you reach 80 points.

Tips

  • Shuffle the letters when you get stuck; new neighbours suggest new words.
  • Try common German endings such as -EN, -ER and -UNG with the centre letter.
  • Remember verbs only count in the infinitive and nouns only in the base form.
  • Look for the all-letter word early; it is worth ten points.
