The Winfield Game is a daily sports trivia puzzle that crosses three leagues. The answer is a basketball, baseball or football star, and you can guess any NBA, MLB or NFL player. Each guess reveals what its career shares with the answer: sport, decades, metro areas, franchises, positions and honours such as Hall of Fame or MVP.

About The Winfield Game

The Winfield Game picks one Answer Player a day from the current and former NBA All-Stars, MLB All-Stars and NFL Pro Bowlers. You type any player from those three leagues, and the game shows only the matches between your guess and the answer.

Matches can be the sport, the decades played, the metro areas played in (even across different sports), the franchises, the positions and awards such as Rookie of the Year, MVP, Hall of Fame, Pro Bowl, All-Pro, Gold Glove and Offensive Player of the Year. A green capsule around a city, team or decade means it is where or when the Answer Player played the most games. The site's own example: guessing Steve Nash when the answer is Emmitt Smith reveals the 1990s and 2000s, Dallas and Phoenix, and the Hall of Fame, even though they played different sports.

You have ten guesses, and after five misses the game offers a hint. It suits fans who follow more than one league and like to reason from career overlaps.

How to play The Winfield Game

  2. Read the matches: sport, decades, cities, teams, positions and awards shared with the Answer Player.
  3. Note green capsules, which mark the team, city or decade where the answer played the most games.
  4. Use the overlaps to pick a closer player, within ten guesses.
  5. Take the hint after five misses if you need it.

Tips

  • Open with a long-career player from a big market; more decades and cities mean more matches to learn from.
  • City matches work across sports, so a basketball guess can tell you where a football answer played.
  • Once the sport is known, use award matches such as HOF or MVP to cut the field.
