Video Game Grid is a daily video game guessing game on a three-by-three grid. Each day nine screenshots fill the squares and you identify the game in each one, with a release-year hint per tile and five lives, in a Name THE Game or Name ANY Game mode. Images come from IGDB and past grids sit in an archive.

About Video Game Grid

Video Game Grid is a daily video game guessing game played on a three-by-three grid. Each day it fills the nine squares with screenshots from different games, the same board for everyone, and your job is to identify the game in each shot. A small label shows the release year of each game as a hint, and a percentage on each tile reflects how often players get that one.

There are two modes to switch between: Name THE Game, where you identify the specific game shown in a square, and Name ANY Game. You have five lives, shown as hearts at the top, so wrong guesses are limited and it pays to start with the shots you recognise. The screenshots span decades and platforms, from early-1990s sprites to modern 3D games, so a single grid can jump from a 1991 side-scroller to a 2019 release.

The game draws its data and images from IGDB, keeps an archive of past puzzles you can play, and tracks your progress with a level system. It plays in the browser and is free.

It suits players with a broad video game memory who enjoy recognising games at a glance, and anyone who likes a quick daily identification challenge.

How to play Video Game Grid

  1. Open Video Game Grid to see the day's three-by-three grid of game screenshots.
  2. Pick a mode: Name THE Game to identify the exact game in a square, or Name ANY Game.
  3. Click a square, look at the screenshot and its release-year hint, and type the game.
  4. Fill in the games you recognise first; you have five lives, so avoid wild guesses.
  5. Complete the grid, or use Give Up to reveal it, and try earlier boards in the Puzzle Archive.

Tips

  • Start with the screenshots you are surest of to protect your five lives.
  • Use the release-year label to narrow a shot to the right era before guessing.
  • Look for tell-tale art styles, HUD elements and characters that pin down a series.
  • If a square stumps you, move on and come back once the others give you a feel for the grid's theme.
