thingdle

thingdle riddle card for puzzle 179: Hold me at a slightly wrong angle, and I could end up somewhere else entirely

thingdle gives you one short riddle each day about an ordinary man-made object, from a power washer to a piano. Guess any object and every guess is scored on its size, weight, number of parts and categories, so you can close in on the answer. You have six tries, with two extra hints along the way.

About thingdle

thingdle is a daily riddle game about the things around you. Each morning there is one numbered riddle, often written in the object's own voice, and the answer is always something people make and use in its ordinary form. Food, drinks and anything from nature are ruled out, which keeps the field to tools, furniture, gadgets and the like.

You can read the riddle and answer straight away, but most days you will need to narrow it down. Every guess appears as a row of cells for size (the longest dimension), typical weight, number of parts and categories. Green means your guess is in the same range as the answer, a single arrow means the answer is a little bigger, heavier or more complex, and a double arrow means it is far off. The category cell turns yellow when only some of the answer's categories match. One hint is shown from the start and two more open after your second and fourth guess.

The mix of a written riddle and Wordle-style feedback is what sets it apart from attribute games built on characters or players: here the clues are physical measurements, so a sense of how heavy a kettle is or how many parts a stapler has pays off. A solve earns a badge from Psychic for a first-try answer to Survivor for a sixth. It is free in the browser with no sign-up, in English and German, and suits players who like riddles more than vocabulary.

How to play thingdle

  1. Read today's riddle at the top of the page.
  2. Type the name of any man-made object and pick it from the list.
  3. Check the coloured cells for size, weight, parts and category; follow the arrows toward bigger or smaller, heavier or lighter.
  4. Use the hints that open after your second and fourth guess if you are stuck.
  5. Name the object within six tries to earn a badge; after the sixth try the answer is shown.

Tips

  • Read the riddle twice before guessing; it often tells you how the object is used, which narrows the category.
  • Open with a mid-sized household object so the size and weight arrows point you somewhere useful.
  • Tap the category column to see every possible category and rule whole groups out.
  • Remember food, drinks and natural things are never the answer.
