Searchle

Guess how Google autocompletes the day's search.

Every day: One search prompt a day, the same for everyone, such as 'why is the sky so': guess the word Google's autocomplete puts next, Wordle-style, with coloured letters after each try. New puzzle: Once a day; the site does not state the time.

Searchle shows the start of a search query each day and asks how Google would finish it. You type guesses for the missing word and, as in Wordle, each letter turns to show whether it is in the word and in the right place. It is one of the Teuteuf games.

About Searchle

Searchle mixes Wordle with the oddities of search autocomplete. Each day it shows the beginning of a search that people really type, like 'why does cheese have', 'can donkeys' or 'is it okay to eat raw', and the word Google suggests next is the answer. Everyone gets the same prompt that day.

You guess the word letter by letter in a grid, and each guess is coloured like Wordle: the right letter in the right spot, a letter that is in the word elsewhere, and a letter that is not there at all. The length of the answer changes from day to day with the prompt, so the grid shows how many letters you need. The fun is that the answer is often not the sensible completion but the strange one people actually search for.

Settings let you require valid English words and turn on Hard Mode, where letters you have found must be used in later guesses. Past days can be played from a date picker. Searchle is part of Teuteuf's family of games with Worldle and WhenTaken, and its own page bills it as a word game the whole family can enjoy.

How to play Searchle

  1. Open Searchle and read the day's search prompt.
  2. Think how Google would finish it and type a word of the length shown.
  3. Read the colours: right letter and spot, in the word elsewhere, or not in the word.
  4. Use the clues to try again until you find the autocomplete word, then share your result.

Tips

  • Go for the odd answer: autocomplete reflects what people search, not what makes sense.
  • The number of boxes tells you the answer's length; count it before your first guess.
  • Try Hard Mode once the normal game feels easy.
