About Sõnar

Sõnar brings the Wordle formula to Estonian. Every day there is one hidden word of five letters, the same for all players, and the aim is to find it in six tries or fewer.

You type real Estonian words, using a keyboard with the letters of the Estonian alphabet. After each guess the tiles change colour: one colour for a letter in the right place, another for a letter that is in the word but somewhere else, and grey for a letter that is not there at all. Each guess narrows down the answer.

The words come from Sõnaveeb, the dictionary of the Institute of the Estonian Language, and there are also four- and six-letter variants.

It suits Estonian speakers and learners who want their daily word puzzle in their own language.

How to play Sõnar

1. Type any five-letter Estonian word.
2. Read the colours: right place, wrong place, or not in the word.
3. Use the clues to choose your next word.
4. Find the word within six tries.

Tips

• Open with a word rich in common Estonian letters and vowels.
• Letters with accents or diacritics count as separate letters.
• Use your second guess on fresh letters to learn more.
