Lettergrams Daily Board #181: an empty five by five grid with TW, DW, DL and TL squares above a rack of twelve letter tiles and a five star score bar

Lettergrams is a free daily word game from Waffle Studio, the makers of Waffle. Each numbered board gives you a rack of twelve letter tiles and a five by five grid with bonus squares. You must use all the tiles in valid, connected words, and your score earns up to five stars.

About Lettergrams

Lettergrams is played on Puzzlist, Waffle Studio's puzzle site, in the browser. Each day there is one numbered Daily Board: a five by five grid with a few bonus squares and a rack of letter tiles, each tile carrying a point value as in Scrabble. On board #181 the rack was J, L, T, S, D, U, A, E, R, H, M and U.

The three rules are short. Use all the tiles, every word must be valid, and everything must connect, so no word may float on its own. Invalid words show up in red. Double and triple letter squares boost one tile, and double and triple word squares boost the whole word, so where you place a high-value letter such as J matters.

A bar at the top marks five star thresholds; on board #181 they ran from 12 to 111 points. You can tap a tile to send it back to the rack, clear the whole board, and keep reworking it until you are happy, then press All Done to save the score. Statistics track your streak, games played, total stars and score spread.

How to play Lettergrams

  1. Look at today's rack of tiles and the bonus squares on the board.
  2. Drag tiles onto the grid to form words that read across or down.
  3. Make sure every word is valid and connects to the rest, and that the rack ends up empty.
  4. Rework the board to move high-value letters onto bonus squares, then tap All Done.

Tips

  • Put the highest-value tile, such as a J, on a triple letter square, or inside a word that reaches a word bonus.
  • Find a place for awkward letters first; vowels and S are easy to fit in at the end.
  • A valid board earns stars, but the top star needs a much higher score, so keep reworking once everything fits.
