Kanjile (漢字ル) board before the first guess: an empty grid four squares wide for four-kanji idioms, with theme, settings, info and statistics icons

Kanjile (漢字ル) is a daily Japanese puzzle in the Wordle family: the answer is a four-character idiom, a yojijukugo. You have up to 20 guesses, and the hints go down to the parts that make up each kanji.

About Kanjile (漢字ル)

Kanjile asks you to find a yojijukugo, a Japanese four-character compound or idiom, each day; the answer is the same for every player.

Each guess must itself be a four-kanji idiom. The feedback does not stop at whole characters: it also shows which components of each kanji, the radicals and parts they are built from, match the answer, so a near miss can still tell you a lot. You have up to 20 guesses.

The board is a plain grid four squares wide that grows a row with each guess, with settings, a dark mode, an info page and your statistics in the header. It is free in the browser, made by the developer motemen.

It suits Japanese speakers and advanced learners who enjoy kanji and idioms.

How to play Kanjile (漢字ル)

  1. Type a four-kanji idiom as your guess.
  2. Read which kanji, and which kanji components, match the answer.
  3. Use the component hints to choose your next idiom.
  4. Find the day's idiom within 20 guesses.

Tips

  • Start with a common idiom using frequent kanji.
  • Pay attention to matching radicals; they narrow the kanji fast.
