Grebe

Daily puzzles played on the tree of life, from hidden organisms to species groupings.

Every day: Four numbered puzzles a day on the tree of life, the same for everyone: Lineage (find a hidden organism by shared clades), Kinship (sort sixteen species into four groups), Branches (place species on the tree) and Mosaic (name an animal from a shuffled photo). New puzzle: Once a day; the site does not state the time.

Grebe is a set of daily biology puzzles built on the tree of life, the shared-ancestry tree linking all living things. Four games are new each day and the same for everyone: Lineage, Kinship, Branches and Mosaic.

About Grebe

Grebe gathers several daily games around one idea: the tree of life, which connects every living thing through shared ancestry. Each game is numbered, new every day and the same for every player.

Lineage, inspired by Metazooa, hides an organism. Every wrong guess lands on the tree at the clade it shares with the answer, so each miss narrows down where the target sits. Kinship, inspired by Connections, gives you sixteen species to sort into four hidden groups of four, each a clade, before you run out of guesses. Branches is a Grebe original: rebuild a slice of the tree by dragging each species onto its branch, using the worked examples already placed. Mosaic, also original and newer than the rest, shows an animal photograph cut into shuffled tiles; every wrong guess puts a little more of the picture back together.

The site has a leaderboard, stats and an optional account, and promises more tree-of-life games to come.

It suits naturalists, biology students and Metazooa fans who want more than one taxonomic puzzle a day.

How to play Grebe

  1. Open grebegames.com and pick one of the day's games.
  2. In Lineage, guess organisms and follow where each miss lands on the tree.
  3. In Kinship, group sixteen species into four clades; in Branches, drag species onto their branches.
  4. In Mosaic, name the animal as the shuffled photo is restored; play all four and check the leaderboard.

Tips

  • In Lineage, start with broad guesses from different kingdoms to find the right part of the tree.
  • In Kinship, think about ancestry rather than looks: whales sit with hoofed mammals.
  • Use the worked examples in Branches as anchors for the rest.
