Birdle UK shows a photo of a British bird each day and gives you five guesses to name it. After each guess, letters in the answer turn green and the rest red, though not their positions, and a hangman-style hint fills in as you go. You can also guess a broad type such as OWL, at a cost to your score.

About Birdle UK

This Birdle, at birdlegame.com, keeps to the birds of the United Kingdom. Each day it shows one photograph and asks for the bird's name, from robins and kestrels to scarcer visitors such as red-necked phalaropes and great shearwaters. Every player sees the same bird on the same day.

The feedback works on letters rather than on the bird's family. After each guess, letters that appear in the answer show green and the others red. Bird names vary in length, so the game cannot tell you where a letter goes. You can type a generic bird type instead of a full name, such as OWL or GULL, to narrow things down; the end screen counts how many of those you used.

If you are stuck, Show Hint gives a hangman-style line for the answer that fills in as your guesses hit letters: a guess of PUFFIN for ROBIN turns _ _ _ _ _ into _ _ _ I N. There is a colour blind mode with higher contrast colours, and a stats panel with your guess distribution.

It is a small, free browser game with no account. It is not the same game as the Birdle at play-birdle.com, which uses taxonomy and regional birds.

How to play Birdle UK

  1. Open Birdle UK and look at the day's bird photo.
  2. Type the bird's name; punctuation is not needed.
  3. Read the letters: green ones are in the answer, red ones are not.
  4. Use Show Hint for a hangman-style view of the answer if you need it.
  5. Name the bird within five guesses, then check back when the countdown ends.

Tips

  • A guess like GULL or OWL tests a whole group and reveals common letters, though it counts against your score.
  • Long names with many common letters, such as LESSER SPOTTED WOODPECKER, check a lot of letters in one go.
  • The hint keeps the word breaks, so it tells you how many words the answer has.
  • Turn on colour blind mode if green and red are hard to tell apart.
