An AO3dle daily round: Kendou Itsuka from My Hero Academia against Beelzebub from Helluva Boss, with the question Which has more works? between them

AO3dle is a higher or lower game built on Archive of Our Own, the fan fiction archive. Its daily challenge gives everyone the same ten pairs of characters or tags, and for each pair you choose the one with more works written about it. You get one go a day and a row of green and red squares to share.

About AO3dle

AO3dle takes its numbers from Archive of Our Own, where every fan work is tagged with the characters and relationships in it. The game shows two of those characters or tags side by side, each with a picture and a note on the franchise it comes from, and asks which has more works on the archive.

The daily challenge is a separate page from the endless main mode. It runs for exactly ten rounds, each with two new names and no franchise tags, and both work counts stay hidden until you choose. Everyone gets the same ten rounds that day, and you have one attempt. Each round fills a square green or red, and at the end you can review the rounds, share the row of squares and see a countdown to the next set, which arrives at midnight UTC.

The pairs mix anime, cartoons, web series, books and games, so a round might set a My Hero Academia student against a Helluva Boss demon. Knowing a show's fan base helps more than knowing the show itself: a minor character in a big fandom often beats the lead of a small one. The maker notes that the daily mode is in beta and can be unsteady around midnight UTC.

Outside the daily, the main mode keeps going until you miss, with an option to include relationship and other non-character tags, a hard mode of three hidden counts at once, and a Twitch mode where a streamer's chat votes. It suits fan fiction readers and writers who like guessing what the rest of fandom is writing about.

How to play AO3dle

  1. Open the daily challenge page.
  2. Read the two characters or tags shown, with the franchise each comes from.
  3. Click the one you think has more works on Archive of Our Own.
  4. See whether you were right as the round's square turns green or red, then go to the next round.
  5. Finish all ten rounds and share your score.

Tips

  • A side character from a very large fandom often has more works than the lead of a small one.
  • Characters from long-running anime and shows with active shipping communities tend to have high counts.
  • Click the squares after you finish to review each round and the counts you missed.
