Worpel is a daily guessing game for Australian rules football fans. Each guess is checked against the mystery AFL player on club, state, position, debut, height, age and jumper number, and you can show the player's silhouette as a hint. A separate Legends mode asks for footy greats.

About Worpel

Worpel is the AFL take on the mystery player games that spread after Wordle, the same family as Poeltl for the NBA and Who Are Ya for football. There is one mystery player a day, chosen from current AFL lists, and you have eight guesses to find him.

Each guess fills a row of columns: team, state, position, debut year, height, age and jumper number. Green in any column is a match. Yellow means close, and what close means depends on the column: in the team column it means the mystery player's club shares one or more colours with your guess, in the state column that he plays in a bordering state, and in the position column a partial match, such as a key defender against a medium defender. In the number columns, yellow means you are within three centimetres, years or numbers. If you are stuck you can show the player's silhouette.

Worpel Legends is a second daily puzzle on the same site, started later in 2022, where the answer is a footy great. Its columns are tuned for retired players: team, position, number of clubs, last season, height, premierships and jumper number.

The game is free with ads, needs no account and keeps your streak and guess distribution in the browser. It rewards fans who know lists beyond their own club, since height and debut year are often what separate two similar players.

How to play Worpel

  1. Type the name of any current AFL player and pick him from the list.
  2. Read the row: green is a match, yellow is close (shared club colours, a bordering state, a partial position, or within three of the number).
  3. Use the clues to choose your next guess, and show the silhouette if you need help.
  4. Find the player within eight guesses, then share your score or play Legends.

Tips

  • Open with a mid-career player from a big club so the debut, age and team clues tell you the most.
  • Club colours matter: a yellow team cell rules in every club that shares a colour with your guess.
  • Use height to split positions: rucks and key position players are much taller than small forwards.
  • Keep the silhouette for last; build, hair and stance can confirm a final choice between two names.
