The Boston Globe posts a new set of sudoku puzzles every night at midnight Eastern: an easy, a medium and a hard grid for the day. It is free on the Globe's games page, you can play alone, with friends or on paper, and the last two weeks of puzzles stay open in the archive.

About Sudoku (Boston Globe)

Sudoku is one of the classic puzzles on Boston Globe Games, the paper's daily puzzle page next to its Crossword, Mini Crossword, Align, KenKen and Word Flower. The page shows the day's date and asks you to choose your puzzle: Easy, Medium or Hard.

Each is a standard 9x9 sudoku. Some squares are given, and you fill the rest so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box holds the digits 1 to 9 once. The easy grid falls to simple scanning, while the hard one needs longer chains of deduction. A new set appears at midnight Eastern Time.

The Globe keeps its sudoku free. You can solve on your own, team up with friends, or print the grid to solve with a pencil, and the archive holds every puzzle from the past two weeks, so a missed day can be caught up. It suits anyone who wants a daily sudoku from a newspaper with a choice of difficulty.

How to play Sudoku (Boston Globe)

  1. Open Sudoku on the Boston Globe's games page and choose Easy, Medium or Hard.
  2. Look at the given digits in the 9x9 grid.
  3. Place the digits 1 to 9 so each row, column and 3x3 box holds each digit once.
  4. Fill every empty square to finish, and come back after midnight Eastern for new grids.

Tips

  • Scan each 3x3 box for a digit that can go in only one square.
  • Pencil in candidates on the hard grid; it usually needs pairs and other patterns.
  • Work the easy grid first if you want a warm-up before the hard one.
