Riddle Grid is a daily word puzzle that joins cryptic crossword clues to a word search. Each day's numbered puzzle gives you a grid of letters and a list of cryptic clues with answer lengths. You solve a clue, then drag through neighbouring letters, including diagonals, to spell the answer. The answers weave around each other in the grid.

About Riddle Grid

Riddle Grid mixes two kinds of puzzle. On one side is a list of cryptic clues, each with a number showing how many letters are in the answer. On the other is a square grid of letters. The task is to find the answers to the clues hidden in the grid.

You spell a word by dragging through adjacent letters, moving horizontally, vertically or diagonally, much as in Boggle. The answers are not laid out in straight lines. The game's tutorial makes a point of it: words can intertwine, weaving around each other in the same grid without sharing letters. So finding one answer also narrows down where the others can be.

If a clue has you stuck, Need a Hint? lets you pick a clue and see the first and last letters of its answer. You can use a hint on each remaining clue. The clues are drawn from cryptics.georgeho.org, an open dataset of cryptic crossword clues, which the game credits under the ODbL licence.

Each puzzle is numbered and has its own date, and a new grid appears every day; the game follows the UTC date. Earlier puzzles have their own pages by date, and the game keeps a streak.

How to play Riddle Grid

  1. Read today's cryptic clues; the number with each one is the length of the answer.
  2. Solve a clue, then find its answer in the letter grid.
  3. Drag through adjacent letters, across, up and down or diagonally, to spell the word.
  4. Answers wind around each other without sharing letters; find them all to finish.
  5. Stuck? Use Need a Hint? to reveal the first and last letters of a clue's answer.

Tips

  • Scan the grid for rare letters such as J, Q, X or Z; they narrow down where long answers run.
  • Each found word removes letters from play, which makes the rest easier.
  • Save hints for the clues whose wordplay you cannot crack.
