GuessAndMatch Ravel gameplay sample

Ravel is GuessAndMatch's name guessing game, and its daily College Football Team edition hides one of the 138 FBS schools each day. Each guess shows whether its conference, region, state and number of words match, and colours the name to tell you whether the answer comes earlier or later in the alphabet. You have seven tries.

About Ravel

GuessAndMatch is a site of name guessing and trivia games, and Ravel is its main format: pick a topic, get a hidden name and find it in seven guesses. The daily College Football Team puzzle draws from the 138 schools in Division I FBS, across its 10 conferences.

Every guess gives two kinds of clue. First, its attributes are compared with the answer: conference, region, state and the number of words in the name, each marked as a match or not. Second, the name itself is coloured. Red means your guess is alphabetically after the answer, so move toward A; blue means it is before, so move toward Z. Green starting letters are correct, and the answer always sits between your closest red and blue guesses.

The game also scores how cleanly you use the clues. Guessing a team that contradicts something you already know earns an Egg, and some attributes are marked as high voltage: missing one of those can end the game at once. Difficulty levels change how many Eggs you are allowed, from up to seven in Practice to none in Superpro. The answer is revealed after the seventh try or when you win or lose early.

Besides the daily, you can play the college football topic as often as you like, and the site runs daily Ravel puzzles on other topics such as superheroes, countries, video games, sports teams and tennis players, along with Elimina8, TimeLine and Wordess.

How to play Ravel

  1. Open the daily College Football Team puzzle and enter a first guess, for example Florida Gators.
  2. Check the conference, region, state and word count clues to see what matched.
  3. Read the colours: red means go toward A, blue means go toward Z, green letters are correct starting letters.
  4. Guess a team that fits every clue so far, avoiding Eggs for clue errors.
  5. Find the team within seven tries.

Tips

  • Open with a team in the middle of the alphabet so the colour clue cuts the field in half.
  • Once the conference matches, list its members and keep only those between your red and blue guesses.
  • Watch the high voltage attributes: contradicting one can end the game immediately.
  • Use the word count clue to rule out long names such as those with Golden or Fighting in them.
