on plot-hole.com

Plot-hole is a free daily movie guessing game. You start with a vague clue about the film's setting or genre, and each clue you reveal is more specific, through a character, the conflict and a memorable scene to the actors and director. Your score is the number of the clue you guessed on, five down to one.
About Plot-hole
Plot-hole is a daily movie trivia game with a numbered puzzle each day, the same for everyone, and an archive of more than 200 past puzzles to catch up on. It plays in the browser on a phone or a desktop with no account and no paywall.
Each puzzle has five clues, counted down. Clue 5, the setup, gives only a genre, a setting or a mood. Clue 4 brings in a key character without naming them. Clue 3 describes the central conflict. Clue 2 gives a memorable scene, line or detail. Clue 1 names the actors, the director or the year. Under each clue the game shows what share of today's players got it there.
Your score is the clue number on which you guess right: 5 out of 5 from the setup alone, 1 if you need the last clue, 0 if you never get it. Skipping to the next clue costs a point. The result screen shows the poster, your rank for the day and a challenge link to send a friend. Streaks count your days, and streak freezes, earned by playing, cover a missed one. All-time leaderboards rank players by their total.
The site has added side modes: Movie DNA, a Poster round and Badly, which describes films badly on purpose. The daily itself carries one small sponsor card on the result screen, which the site sells by the day, and a promo banner can sit above the clue.
A first-time visitor does not start on the day's puzzle: the site serves a short ramp of easy past puzzles from the archive first (Frozen, puzzle #64 from May 22, was the first one in October), and then hands over to the live daily. Everyone who has finished the ramp plays the same numbered puzzle that day.
The clues are about the story rather than the credits, so it suits players who remember plots better than cast lists. The same makers run TV Addict for TV shows and Luminary for actors.
How to play Plot-hole
- Open Plot-hole and read Clue 5, the vaguest description of the day's film.
- Type a movie title in the box and pick it from the suggestions, then press Guess.
- If you do not know it, press Skip to reveal the next, more specific clue; each skip costs a point.
- Clues move from a character to the conflict and a memorable scene; Clue 1 names the actors, director or year.
- Your score is the number of the clue you guessed on; share it, challenge a friend and keep your streak.

Tips
- Read the setup for genre, place and era before guessing; it often narrows the field to a handful of well known films.
- The character clue often names a job or relationship that fits only a few famous films.
- The share of players who solved it at each clue tells you how hard the day is.
- Runs of puzzles often follow a theme, such as a week of action films or animated classics, so the last few days in the archive can hint at today's.
- Use the archive to practise the clue style on past puzzles.
Questions
Is Plot-hole free?
Yes. The daily needs no account and has no paywall. Its result screen shows one small sponsor card that the site sells by the day.
When does a new Plot-hole puzzle come out?
Every day at midnight US Eastern Time. The result screen counts down to the next one.
How is Plot-hole scored?
Your score is the clue number on which you guess right: 5 for the first clue, down to 1 for the last, and 0 if you miss. Skipping a clue costs a point.
Can I play old puzzles?
Yes. The archive lists every past puzzle with its film and the average score.
What happens to my streak if I miss a day?
Streak freezes, earned by playing (one per 14 completed puzzles, plus milestone bonuses), protect it automatically.
Why did Plot-hole give me an old puzzle on my first visit?
New players start on a short ramp of easy puzzles from the archive, such as Frozen from May 22, before the site moves them on to the live daily. It is not a rerun: today's numbered puzzle is still there, and the archive keeps every past day.
