mottom is a French semantic word game for the web and iPhone. Each day there is one secret word, the same for everyone, and every word you try gets a temperature showing how close it is in meaning; at 100 degrees you have found it. The aim is to get there in fewer words than your friends and keep your streak going.

About mottom : devine le mot du jour

You can type any French word. The game answers with a temperature: chat warms up if the secret word is croquette, for example, and the list of your guesses is sorted from hottest to coldest, with emoji from ice cubes to flames. Reading which words are warm and thinking about what links them is how you close in. Three hints are available, the first letter, the number of letters or a nearby word, paid with tokens you earn by playing.

The Mot du jour tab shows the day's game, a countdown of the hours left, how many words you have used and which friends have already found it, with a separate ranking tab. Once you find the word its definition appears, and you can tap any of the hundred closest words to read theirs. The next day a card brings back yesterday's word, its meaning and your place among the players.

Besides the daily word you can create a private game and invite friends, or join a public one: everyone hunts the same word at the same time, sees each other's guesses as they come in and can talk in the game's chat. Every Sunday at 20:00 an open table brings everyone together on one word. mottom is made by Paul Mailhes and came to the App Store in September 2026. It is free with no ads, no purchases and no trackers, and you can play without an account.

How to play mottom : devine le mot du jour

  1. Open the Mot du jour tab.
  2. Type any French word and press Jouer.
  3. Read its temperature: the higher it is, the closer your word is in meaning to the secret word.
  4. Use the warmest words so far to think of related words and keep guessing.
  5. Reach 100 degrees to find the word, then read its definition and see how you ranked.

Tips

  • Start with broad, everyday words from different fields, such as maison, musique or travail, to find a warm area quickly.
  • Once a word is hot, try synonyms and words used in the same sentence with it.
  • Look at the whole sorted list: two or three warm words together often point to the theme.
  • Save tokens for the first-letter hint on hard days; it narrows things a lot when you are already warm.
