WELT's Kreuzworträtsel is a free German crossword of the day on the newspaper's games pages. You pick a clue from the list, type the answer into the grid and race a timer; the marked squares spell a solution word, and at the end you see how your time compares with other solvers.

About Kreuzworträtsel (WELT)

The crossword has been part of WELT's online games since 2011 and now sits in the Spiele section alongside the paper's Wordle and sudoku. WELT describes it as a new puzzle every day with questions from all sorts of fields, from the Japanese name for Japan to a giant panda in five letters. Each calendar date has its own grid.

It is a classic German Kreuzworträtsel played in the browser. The clues sit in a list beside the grid. Clicking one highlights the square where its answer starts, and you type the word with your keyboard, overwriting or deleting letters you got wrong. A clock runs from the moment you begin.

As you fill the grid, certain squares feed a row of boxes below it, which builds up the Lösungswort, the solution word. When the puzzle is done the game shows the word and the person it points to, along with how you did compared with the other solvers. The next day brings a fresh grid and another chance to beat your time.

How to play Kreuzworträtsel (WELT)

  1. Open the WELT Kreuzworträtsel page; the day's grid starts after a short countdown.
  2. Click a clue in the list beside the grid to highlight where its answer begins.
  3. Type the answer with your keyboard; overwrite or delete any wrong letters.
  4. Watch the solution word fill in from the marked squares as you go.
  5. Finish the grid to see the solution word and how your time compares with other players.

Tips

  • Start with the clues that state a letter count and a clear fact, such as capitals or animals.
  • Fill in the solution word from the letters you have; guessing it early gives you letters for harder clues.
  • The timer keeps running, so skip a hard clue and come back once crossing answers give you letters.
