Name the day's film from its screenshots in six guesses.

Guess The Movie.Name #732: the first still, a pine forest with a path between the trunks, six numbered guess slots with a Skip button, and the movie search box with Submit

Guess The Movie is the film edition of GuessThe.Game. Each day it shows one screenshot from a film and gives you six guesses; every wrong answer or skip reveals another frame and, from the second, a written hint. A second daily puzzle asks you to name a film from its cover in five guesses.

About Guess The Movie (guessthemovie.name)

Guess The Movie is the film counterpart of GuessThe.Game, made in the same format by the same site family. Every day one film is chosen and six screenshots from it are lined up. You see only the first, type the title you think it is into a search box, and either get it or unlock the next frame. Skipping also opens the next frame, at the cost of a guess.

From the second guess on, a text hint appears under the pictures as well: the film's Metacritic score, then its genre, its original release year, a notable actor and finally the director. By the sixth frame most people have it; the skill is in getting it from the first one or two. The film is numbered, starting from puzzle 1 on 3 October 2024, and the next one opens at midnight on your own clock.

The makers mix well-known films with obscure ones across genres and eras, and say harder films tend to fall on weekends and easier ones on weekdays. A Previous Days page lets you play any earlier number. Guess The Cover is a second daily puzzle in which a film's cover is uncovered a tile at a time, with five guesses. There are also themed quest sets, such as A24 films or films identified by the cars in them, mostly behind the paid tier.

The game is free with ads. A premium membership removes the ads, syncs stats between devices, and opens past Cover and Quest puzzles. It suits anyone who plays Framed and wants a second film to name each day, with hints that help when the stills alone do not.

How to play Guess The Movie (guessthemovie.name)

  1. Look at the first screenshot from the day's film.
  2. Search for the title you think it is and submit it, or press Skip.
  3. After a miss or skip, another screenshot opens, and from the second guess a written hint about the film.
  4. Keep going until you name the film or use all six guesses.
  5. Try Guess The Cover, or open Previous Days to play earlier numbers.

Tips

  • Weekday films tend to be easier and weekend ones harder, so expect to need the hints on Saturday and Sunday.
  • Look at costumes, cars and picture quality in the first frame: they date the film before the release-year hint does.
  • A skip costs the same as a wrong guess, so make a plausible guess instead; it might be right.
  • The Metacritic score in the first hint separates prestige dramas from blockbusters quickly.
