PokeCryptic for October 26, 2026 by PC: a nine-letter cryptic clue about thorns and a rose, empty letter boxes, a Par 2 bar, Hints and Check buttons and an on-screen keyboard

PokeCryptic gives you a single cryptic clue each day in the style of a British crossword, with an answer drawn from the Pokémon world: a species, move, item, ability, place or trainer. You can reveal the indicators, fodder, definition or single letters as hints, and your hint count is compared with the day's par from other solvers.

About PokeCryptic

PokeCryptic is a daily puzzle that sets one cryptic crossword clue, in the British style, with an answer taken from the world of Pokémon. The answer might be a species, a move, an item, an ability, a place or a trainer, so solving it needs both the wordplay skills of a cryptic crossword and a good knowledge of the games. Every player gets the same clue each day, dated at the top of the page, and each clue names the person who wrote it.

A cryptic clue has two parts: a straight definition at one end and wordplay (an anagram, hidden word, charade or similar) that spells the same answer another way, with the length shown in brackets. You type your answer into the row of letter boxes and press Check. A wrong answer only shakes the boxes, so you can keep trying. The Hints button reveals the parts of the clue in turn (the indicators, the fodder and the definition, each with a short explanation) or gives you single letters when you are stuck. The number of hints you use is measured against a par worked out from other solvers, and the results screen shows how many trainers have solved the day's clue.

Many clues come with a short YouTube video that walks through the wordplay once you have solved it, which makes the game a gentle way to learn how cryptic clues are built.

The game runs in the browser, keeps your progress in local storage with no account, and resets at local midnight. It is free and shows no ads. The clues are drawn in order from a bank of 300 that started on 1 January 2026, so the first ones come back from late October 2026.

It suits Pokémon fans who also enjoy cryptic crosswords, and anyone who liked Minute Cryptic and wants answers from a world they know.

How to play PokeCryptic

  1. Read the day's cryptic clue. The number in brackets is the answer's length.
  2. Find the definition at one end and the wordplay (anagram, hidden word, charade and the like) that spells the same answer.
  3. Type your answer into the letter boxes and press Check. A wrong answer can be changed and checked again.
  4. Open Hints when you are stuck to reveal the indicators, fodder, definition or a letter.
  5. Solve with as few hints as you can to meet the day's par, then watch the clue's explainer video if it has one.

Tips

  • Split the clue in two: one end is a plain definition, the rest is wordplay for the same answer.
  • Watch for anagram signals like dizzy, around or mixed, which tell you to rearrange nearby letters.
  • Lean on the length in brackets and your Pokemon knowledge to shortlist answers before spending a hint.
  • Spend hints sparingly: the definition hint alone often cracks it, and each one costs you against par.

Questions

What can the answer be?

Anything from the Pokemon world: a species, move, item, ability, place or trainer. The bracketed number gives its length.

What is par?

A target number of hints based on how many other solvers needed. Using fewer hints than par is a good result.

Do I need to know cryptic crosswords?

It helps, but the hints break the clue into its parts, so it is also a friendly way to learn how cryptic clues work.

Is it the same clue for everyone?

Yes. One dated clue a day, shared by all players, resetting at local midnight. The clues run in order through a bank of 300 that began on 1 January 2026.

Does PokeCryptic have ads?

No. The page loads no ad scripts, and its privacy note says it does not use personal information for advertising.
