PokeCryptic

PokeCryptic play screen dated October 2, 2026: a cryptic clue reading Dan got so dizzy around the top of roller coaster? (9), a nine-box answer row, a green progress bar labelled Par 4, Hints and Chec

PokeCryptic gives you a single cryptic clue each day in the style of a British crossword, with an answer drawn from the Pokémon world: a species, move, item, ability, place or trainer. You can reveal the indicators, fodder, definition or letters as hints, and your hint count is compared with the day's par from other solvers.

About PokeCryptic

PokeCryptic is a daily puzzle that sets one cryptic crossword clue, in the British style, with an answer taken from the world of Pokemon. The answer might be a species, a move, an item, an ability, a place or a trainer, so solving it needs both the wordplay skills of a cryptic crossword and a good knowledge of the games. Every player gets the same clue each day, dated at the top of the page.

A cryptic clue has two parts: a straight definition at one end and wordplay (an anagram, hidden word, charade or similar) that spells the same answer another way, with the length shown in brackets. You type your answer into the row of letter boxes and press Check. If you are stuck, a Hints button can reveal the parts of the clue in turn, such as the definition, the indicator and the fodder, or give you letters, and the number of hints you use is measured against a par set from how many other solvers needed, so the aim is to solve with as few as possible.

The game runs in the browser, keeps no account and resets at local midnight. It is free.

It suits Pokemon fans who also enjoy cryptic crosswords, and it is a gentle way to learn how cryptic clues work, since every answer sits in a familiar world.

How to play PokeCryptic

  1. Read the day's cryptic clue; the number in brackets is the answer's length.
  2. Find the definition at one end and the wordplay (anagram, hidden word, charade and the like) that spells the same answer.
  3. Type your answer into the letter boxes and press Check.
  4. If you are stuck, use Hints to reveal the definition, indicator, fodder or some letters.
  5. Solve with as few hints as you can to beat the day's par, then come back tomorrow.

Tips

  • Split the clue in two: one end is a plain definition, the rest is wordplay for the same answer.
  • Watch for anagram signals like dizzy, around or mixed, which tell you to rearrange nearby letters.
  • Lean on the length in brackets and your Pokemon knowledge to shortlist answers before spending a hint.
  • Spend hints sparingly: the definition hint alone often cracks it, and each one costs you against par.

Questions

What can the answer be?

Anything from the Pokemon world: a species, move, item, ability, place or trainer. The bracketed number gives its length.

What is par?

A target number of hints based on how many other solvers needed. Using fewer hints than par is a good result.

Do I need to know cryptic crosswords?

It helps, but the hints break the clue into its parts, so it is also a friendly way to learn how cryptic clues work.

Is it the same clue for everyone?

Yes. One dated clue a day, shared by all players, resetting at local midnight.
