Plausible's board for 22 October 2026: the word Skimmington with six definitions to choose from, four attempts remaining and a Confirm button

Plausible is a daily dictionary game in the spirit of Fictionary and Balderdash. Each day brings one obscure word with six definitions, and only one is real; the rest were written by players to fool you. Find the real one in as few of your four attempts as you can, then write your own fake for tomorrow's word.

About Plausible

Plausible puts one rare word on its home page each day, with its pronunciation: Skimmington /ˈskɪmɪŋtən/ on 22 October 2026, after nene, tinchel and mumpsimus on the days before. Press Play this word and you get six definitions. One comes from the dictionary, and the other five were written by players the day before, each trying to sound like the real thing. You have four attempts to find the true one, and the fewer you need, the better your score. Afterwards you see how you did against the day's other players.

The second half of the game is optional: writing a fake definition for tomorrow's word. The fakes are ranked with a pairwise Elo system: each time a player picks a definition, it gains points and the others shown beside it lose some. A fake with a higher score is shown to more players, so two players rarely see the same six definitions. The day's leaderboard lists every fake with its author, plays, votes and score, and the real definition sits among them.

The history page lists every past word by date, so you can go back and play days you missed. The daily word plays without an account; logging in or signing up keeps your scores and lets you submit definitions. The game is in English only: its Dutch address says so. The site shows no ads.

It suits players who like rare words and party games such as Balderdash, and anyone who enjoys writing a convincing bluff.

How to play Plausible

  1. Open plausiblegame.com and press Play this word to see the day's word and its pronunciation.
  2. Read the six definitions, select the one you think is real and press Confirm.
  3. If you are wrong, pick again: you have four attempts, and fewer means a better score.
  4. Compare your result with the day's stats for other players.
  5. If you like, write a fake definition for tomorrow's word and check the leaderboard the next day to see how many players it fooled.

Tips

  • Look at the word's pronunciation and spelling for hints of its language of origin, then ask which definitions fit that origin.
  • Player-written fakes often sound too neat or too funny; dictionary definitions tend to be dry and specific.
  • When writing a fake, copy dictionary style: a plain, short definition with a precise detail is more convincing than a joke.
  • Check the leaderboard to see which fakes fooled the most players; it shows what works.

Questions

Where do the fake definitions come from?

Other players write them the day before, for that day's word. A pairwise Elo ranking decides which fakes are shown more often, so the six definitions you see may differ from another player's.

How many tries do I get?

Four attempts to find the real definition among six.

Do I need an account?

No. The day's word plays from the home page. Logging in or signing up keeps your scores and lets you submit your own definitions.

When does the word change?

Once a day. As of October 2026 the countdown on the home page ends at 23:00 UTC, which is midnight UK time.

Can I play past words?

Yes. The history page lists every earlier word by date, and you can open each one to play it or see its statistics.

Is Plausible in other languages?

Not yet. Its Dutch page says the game is currently only available in English.
