Flaminguist's word for 18 October, COMTRANSISM in three letter tiles, above an empty box for your invented definition with Skip and Submit and the three-minute clock in the corner

Flaminguist is a free browser word game built around one invented word a day. You reveal the word, have three minutes to write a definition for it, and come back the next day to read everyone's definitions and vote for the best. A Group Play mode lets a class or a group of friends play live, with one screen hosting and everyone joining from a phone.

About Flaminguist

Flaminguist is a daily word game in the spirit of the parlour game Fictionary, but with no real definition hidden among the fakes. Each day the site has one made-up word, the same for every player. You tap Reveal today's word, and a three-minute clock starts the moment you do.

In those three minutes you invent and submit a definition. There is nothing to get right: the aim is to write something clever or funny enough that other players will pick it. The word resets each day at 6am, according to the site's how-to-play card.

The next day you return to the Vote tab to read the definitions everyone wrote for the previous word and vote for your favourite; you can also skip straight to voting. The Fictionary tab holds the all-time dictionary built from past words, and the Me tab shows your profile. You can sign up for an account to save your definitions and keep a streak, but the daily word plays without one.

Group Play, reached from the Group button at the top right or the Play with your class button on the start screen, is a live party version for friends, a class or any group of three or more. One device hosts the game on a big screen and shows a four-letter code; players join at flaminguist.com/play on their phones or Chromebooks with just a nickname and an avatar, no account needed. Each round a player makes up a word, the others write definitions, the host reads them aloud from the Table View and everyone votes. The host chooses the timer for each phase and the win condition (first to three wins, or everyone gets one turn as word maker), and can pause, skip phases, hide definitions or remove players. A Teacher Quick Guide explains the steps for a classroom, and the site says group data is deleted after 30 days.

Tips

  • Read the word aloud before writing: its sound often suggests a meaning other players will enjoy.
  • Keep the definition short so you finish well inside three minutes.
  • Write it like a dictionary entry, with a part of speech, to make it read as real.
