Vocabr #260 for October 18, 2026: word 1 of 5, Condign, with four definitions to choose from

Vocabr is a short daily vocabulary quiz. Each numbered puzzle gives you five words, one at a time, with four possible definitions, and you pick the right one. A streak counter and a shareable score bring you back when the next puzzle arrives at midnight US Eastern time.

About Vocabr

Vocabr, from Chugger Games, is a vocabulary test that takes a minute or two. Each day's puzzle is numbered and dated and holds five words. For each one you see the word and four definitions, and you choose the one that matches. Puzzle #260 on 18 October 2026 ran condign, totalitarian, derivative, antithetical and polemic.

The wrong options are real definitions of other words, and some sit close to the answer: for derivative, 'imitative of the work of another person' stood beside 'so lacking in originality as to be obvious and boring'. You need to know the word rather than spot an odd one out. Dots at the top of the card mark your progress through the five, and the three wrong options can differ from one visit to the next while the word stays the same.

At the end you see your score out of five, how it compares with other players once enough have finished that day, your streak of days played, a countdown to the next puzzle and a button to share your result. Signing in is offered but not needed to play.

It is free in the browser with no ads and a dark mode, and works as well on a phone as on a desktop. It suits word lovers, students preparing for exams and anyone who wants a quick daily test of their English.

Tips

  • Break a word into its parts: prefixes and roots often give the meaning away.
  • Read all four options before choosing; the wrong ones are real definitions too.
  • Think of the word in a sentence you have heard to test each definition.
  • Look up the words you missed afterwards to remember them.
