Today's Definitions board on desktop: three rows of shuffled word tiles such as LISTEN, SOUNDS, BODY and TEARFUL in green, orange and grey, with 20 swaps remaining

Definitions is a free, ad-supported daily word puzzle from PZL games. Three dictionary definitions are shuffled together across three rows, and you swap pairs of words to rebuild each one. Colours show which words are already right, which belong in that definition but elsewhere, and which belong in another one.

About Definitions (PZL games)

Definitions is one of the daily games on PZL games, the puzzle site from Perfect Level Games Ltd. It uses the same rules as PZL's Headlines, which did this with three news headlines and is taking a break for now.

Each row is one definition with a fixed number of slots, but the words have been shuffled across all three. Tap one word and then another to swap them. After every swap the colours update: green means the right word in the right slot, and it locks; orange means the word belongs to this definition but in another slot; grey means it belongs to a different definition. A high-contrast mode swaps these for orange and blue. Every puzzle can be solved in ten swaps and you have twenty, and the score is given in stars for how close you came to ten.

Part of the fun is guessing what is being defined. One day's board mixes a line about a doctor's instrument for listening to sounds inside the body with one about being moved to tears, and the meaning tells you the order as the words settle. A first-time tutorial shows the rules with three short examples, and past days can be played from the archive. The game is free with ads around the board, and PZL's paid Plus membership removes them.

It suits players who like Waffle's swap-and-colour logic but would rather work with whole words and meanings.

How to play Definitions (PZL games)

  1. Open Definitions on PZL games and play or skip the short tutorial.
  2. Read the three rows: each is one dictionary definition with its words mixed up across all three.
  3. Tap one word and then another to swap them.
  4. Use the colours: green is right and locked, orange is the right definition but the wrong slot, grey is the wrong definition.
  5. Rebuild all three definitions within 20 swaps, aiming for 10, and share your result.

Tips

  • Start with the most distinctive nouns: they tell you what a row is describing.
  • Small words such as A, OF and TO fit almost anywhere, so place the long ones first.
  • Openings such as 'a person who', 'the quality of' or 'to' usually start a definition.
  • Sort grey words into their right rows early; it saves swaps later.

Questions

Is there a new Definitions puzzle every day?

Yes. Each day has its own three definitions, the same for everyone, and it changes at midnight on your own calendar date. Earlier puzzles are in the archive.

How many swaps do I get?

Twenty. Every puzzle can be solved in ten.

What do the colours mean?

Green is the right word in the right place, orange is the right definition but another slot, and grey belongs in another definition. High-contrast mode uses orange and blue instead.

Is it free?

Yes, it plays free in the browser with no account. Ads show beside the board on desktop and above it on a phone; PZL Plus, a paid membership, removes them.
