Middle Word's board for 19 October 2026: Battery above, the guess Bridge 1,238 words after the answer, 9 guesses left, Venatus ads at the sides

Middle Word is a free, ad-supported daily word game from PZL games. Each day starts with two words, one above and one below, and the answer is the common word that sits alphabetically in the middle of them. Every guess tells you how many dictionary words lie between it and the answer, and whether it comes before or after.

About Middle Word (PZL games)

Middle Word is one of the daily games on PZL games, the puzzle site from Perfect Level Games Ltd, alongside 9 Words, Zanagrams, Word Snake and Sunflowers.

Each day opens with two bounds, one above and one below, each 10,000 dictionary words from the answer; on 19 October 2026 they were Battery and Cast. The answer is the common word in its basic form that sits alphabetically halfway between them. You type a guess that falls between the bounds. If it comes before the answer it replaces the top bound, if after, the bottom one, and the bound shows how many dictionary words still lie between it and the answer. A coloured bar fills as you close in, turning from orange to green.

You have ten guesses. It plays like a binary search through the dictionary, but picking words that halve the gap quickly takes some feel for how many words start with each letter pair, and the counts tell you how close you are rather than only which way to go.

The daily plays free without an account, with Venatus ads beside the board that a paid PZL Plus membership removes. It keeps a streak, lets you share your result and opens past days from an archive. It suits players of alphabetical guessing games such as Betweenle and Guess My Word who like a numeric hint as well as a direction.

How to play Middle Word (PZL games)

  1. Open Middle Word on PZL games and read the two starting words and their counts.
  2. Type a word that falls alphabetically between them and press Enter.
  3. Your guess replaces the top bound if it comes before the answer, or the bottom one if it comes after, with the number of words still between.
  4. Use the new bounds to pick a guess near the middle of the gap.
  5. Find the word within ten guesses and share your result.

Tips

  • Use the counts, not just the direction: a number in the hundreds means you are close.
  • The answer is always a common word in its basic form, so skip plurals and rare words.
  • Halve the remaining range each time rather than guessing words you like.

Questions

Is there a new Middle Word every day?

Yes. Each calendar day has one answer, the same for everyone, and past days can be played from the archive.

When does Middle Word reset?

At midnight by the clock of your own device.

How many guesses do I get?

Ten.

Is it free, and does it have ads?

It plays free in the browser with no account. Since 19 October 2026 it shows ads beside the board (a banner above it on a phone); the NO ADS button leads to PZL Plus, a paid membership without them.
