Today's MLB Pickle board after two guesses: Aaron Judge with a gold AL East and green R, R and USA, then Shohei Ohtani with a green R, guess 3 of 9

MLB Pickle is a daily baseball player guessing game. Each guess shows whether your player shares the mystery player's team, league or division, batting and throwing hand, birthplace, age and position, with gold marks for near misses. You can play as a guest or sign in with an MLB account to keep your streak.

About MLB Pickle

MLB Pickle started as WARdle, a daily Major League Baseball player guessing game made by Jeremy Frank and Zachary Ellis. In May 2022 it was renamed MLB Pickle, after the rundown a runner gets caught in between bases, as part of a sponsorship with MLB's MLB Play app, and it is now also listed among the MLB.com games.

Each day there is one mystery player from a current MLB roster. You type at least two letters to search, pick a player, and his row fills in across the columns: team, league and division, bats, throws, where he was born, age and position. A green outline means a match. A gold dashed outline means close: the player is in the same league or the same division, within two years of the age, or plays your pick's position as his alternate one. You have nine guesses.

When the game ends, win or lose, it shows the mystery player's headshot with a link to his highlights, and a share button copies your result without naming him. Stats and your current streak are kept for guests on the device, or on your MLB account if you sign in.

It is a narrower game than the multi-sport grids: a regular who follows the standings and knows which pitchers are left-handed has a real edge. It suits fans of Poeltl, the NBA game built on the same idea.

How to play MLB Pickle

  1. Type at least two letters of an MLB player's name and pick him from the list.
  2. Read his row: team, league and division, bats, throws, birthplace, age and position.
  3. Green outlines are matches; gold dashed outlines mean same league or division, age within two years, or an alternate position.
  4. Use the clues to narrow down to the mystery player within nine guesses.
  5. See his headshot and highlights, and share your result.

Tips

  • Start with a player from a division you know well, so a gold Lg/Div tells you something useful.
  • Bats and throws together cut the field quickly: switch-hitters and left-handed throwers are a small group.
  • Once the league is known, change teams within it rather than repeating a division you have ruled out.
  • Age within two years is gold, so step by about four years at a time until it turns green.

Questions

How many guesses do I get in MLB Pickle?

Nine.

What does a gold box mean?

Close but not exact: same league or same division, within two years of the age, or a position that is the mystery player's alternate.

Is MLB Pickle the same game as WARdle?

Yes. WARdle was renamed MLB Pickle in May 2022 when it partnered with the MLB Play app; the rules stayed the same.

Do I need an account?

No, you can play as a guest. Signing in with an MLB account keeps your stats and streak across devices.

When does MLB Pickle reset?

Once a day. The site does not state the time.
