About GuessCentral

GuessCentral covers four North American leagues on one site. The main page lets you pick the NBA, NFL, MLB or NHL, and each league has an unlimited free play mode and a daily challenge. The old address nhl.guesscentral.com now leads to the NHL section of the same site.

The daily challenge gives one mystery player per league, chosen from that league's players and the same for everyone, and it changes at midnight UTC; the page shows a countdown to the next one. You search for a player by name and pick him from the list. The guess appears in your list with its team, position, conference, division, height, age, jersey number and years of experience, each marked green for a match, yellow for close and grey for a miss. Numbers within two of the answer count as close, and arrows say whether the answer is higher or lower.

You have five guesses. Above the search box sits a blurred photo of the mystery player, and View Silhouette lets you sharpen it up to three times, at a cost to your score. Points fall the more guesses you need, and solving the daily on consecutive days builds a streak, which a missed day resets. You can play without an account; signing up keeps your stats over time.

Between daily puzzles there is free play with random players, a roster practice mode for naming a team's players against the clock, and written guides. It suits fans who follow more than one league and want a short daily round in each.

How to play GuessCentral

1. Open GuessCentral and choose a league, then its Daily challenge (or go straight to NBA, NFL, MLB or NHL Daily).
2. Type a player's name in the search box and pick him from the list.
3. Read the clues: green is a match, yellow is close, grey is a miss, and arrows point higher or lower for height, age, number and experience.
4. Use the next guesses to narrow the team, position and numbers; press View Silhouette to sharpen the blurred photo if you are stuck.
5. Find the player within five guesses, then try the other three leagues' daily players.

Tips

• Open with a well-known player from a team you can rule in or out quickly; conference and division cut the field fast.
• Yellow on a number means within two, so the arrow plus the yellow narrows age or jersey number to a few values.
• Every silhouette reveal costs points, so use it after a couple of guesses rather than at the start.
• The four leagues are separate puzzles with separate streaks, so you can keep up the one you know best.
