Daily Codewords (SudokuWiki)
Rate itA daily codeword: crack which number stands for which letter and fill the crossword grid.
on sudokuwiki.org

SudokuWiki's Daily Codewords is a numbered codeword: a large crossword grid with no clues, where every square holds a number from 1 to 26 and each number stands for one letter. Two letters are given; work out the rest from the shapes of the words, fill the key and cross off the alphabet.
About Daily Codewords (SudokuWiki)
SudokuWiki.org is best known for Andrew Stuart's sudoku solvers and strategy guides, but its daily puzzle menu also has a word puzzle: Daily Codewords. Each day brings a new numbered grid (#997 was dated 21 October 2026), a full 17 by 19 crossword where every white square carries a number from 1 to 26. The same number always means the same letter, and every letter of the alphabet is used at least once.
Two letters are solved for you at the start. From there you look for words where the known letters and the pattern of repeated numbers allow only one answer, and type the letters you find into the grid or the key below it. With Auto-fill on, a letter you enter goes into every square with the same number, and the A to Z list down the side lets you cross off letters as you place them. A timer runs while you solve, Check marks your progress, Re-Start clears the grid, and you can print the puzzle or look at yesterday's solution.
The page does not say when the next grid arrives. Like the site's other dailies, the new codeword goes up some hours after midnight GMT, at about 03:00 UTC: just after midnight UTC on 22 October the page still served the grid dated 21 October.
The page's comment thread is busy with regular solvers discussing the day's words, including the odd puzzle where two letters could swap. The maker answers there, and in September 2026 refreshed the word list after readers' reports.
It suits crossword players who enjoy logic more than general knowledge, since a codeword needs no clues, only a good feel for English words.
How to play Daily Codewords (SudokuWiki)
- Open Daily Codewords on SudokuWiki; today's numbered grid loads on the page.
- Note the two letters already given in the key under the grid.
- Find a word whose number pattern and known letters allow only one answer, click one of its empty squares and type the missing letter.
- With Auto-fill same letters ticked, the letter fills every square with that number; cross it off the A to Z list.
- Keep going until all 26 numbers in the key have their letter, and press Check to see how you did.

Tips
- Short words with two known letters are the quickest way in: a three-letter word ending in a known T often has only a few options.
- The most frequent number in the grid is usually E, and a number that often follows a Q is U.
- Every letter is used at least once, so the last few rare letters (J, Q, X, Z) can be placed by elimination.
Questions
Is SudokuWiki's Daily Codewords free?
Yes. It plays on the page with no sign-up; the site shows ads beside the grid.
Can I see the answers?
The Yesterday's Solution button shows the previous day's filled grid. There is no archive of older codewords to play.
What time does a new Daily Codewords grid appear?
The page does not say. The previous day's grid stays up after midnight GMT, and the new one goes up at about 03:00 to 03:15 UTC, as on SudokuWiki's other daily puzzles.
Does it work on a phone?
The grid loads and takes letters on a phone, but at phone width the right-hand columns of the 17-column grid run past the edge of the screen, so a desktop or tablet is easier.
