on puzzles.independent.co.uk

The Independent's Codeword is a 13x13 grid with no clues: every letter is replaced by a number from 1 to 26, and you work out which is which. A new puzzle is added from Monday to Saturday on the paper's puzzles site, run by Arkadium. It is free in the browser, after a short video ad, and has a daily leaderboard.
About The Independent's Codeword
The Independent runs its puzzles site with Arkadium, which hosts the paper's crosswords next to a large library of casual games. Codeword is one of the paper's own daily puzzles. The game's description says new Codewords are added Monday to Saturday.
A codeword looks like a crossword without clues. Every white square holds a number, and each number stands for one letter of the alphabet, so all 26 letters turn up somewhere in the grid. You start with two or three letters given, enter them wherever their numbers appear, and build words outwards from there. The key strip under the grid records which number you have matched to which letter, and the alphabet row greys out the letters already used.
One odd detail: the numbers on the squares are drawn again each time the page loads, so a reload shows the same grid with a different numbering. The words and the given letters do not change, and neither does the leaderboard, which lists the day's solvers by time.
The menu holds a hint, a check, the full solution, a save, a print view and a clear button, and a timer runs above the grid. On a phone the grid fills the width, with zoom buttons and the key below it. The page opens with a video ad of about half a minute before the grid appears, and ad slots sit around the board.
It suits solvers who like logic as much as words, and anyone who finds cryptic clues too much but still wants a full-size newspaper puzzle.
How to play The Independent's Codeword
- Open the Codeword page on The Independent's puzzles site and start the latest puzzle.
- Fill in the starting letters: every square with the same number gets the same letter.
- Look at partly filled words to guess new letters, for example a pattern like _A_ _ER.
- Enter a letter and it is placed in every square with that number; the key at the bottom keeps track.
- Keep going until all 26 numbers are matched and every word in the grid is real.

Tips
- Common English letters such as E, T, A and S usually belong to the numbers that appear most often.
- Look for short words and word endings like -ING, -ED and -TION.
- Each letter is used once in the key, so a letter already placed cannot belong to another number.
- Use Check sparingly: one wrong letter spreads to every square with that number.
Questions
How often is a new Codeword added?
Monday to Saturday, according to the game's description on The Independent's puzzles site. There is no new grid on Sunday.
Is it free?
Yes. It plays free in the browser with no sign-up. A video ad plays before the grid, and the page shows ads around it.
Are there clues?
No. Each number stands for a letter, and you deduce the letters from the words they make.
Why did the numbers change when I reloaded?
The game renumbers the squares on each load. The grid, its words and the given letters stay the same, so only the labels move.
