Blunderwall shows a wall of 16 words, and one of them is the day's secret word. You have four picks. A wrong pick scores out of seven for how many of its letters sit in the same place as in the secret word, and you use those scores to rule out the rest of the wall.

About Blunderwall

Blunderwall is a short deduction puzzle made from a grid of words. Every word on the wall is a candidate, and only one is right. You tap a word to guess it. If it is wrong, the game tells you how many of its letters are in the correct position in the secret word, as a score, out of seven in the site's example. The site's own example: if the answer is SPEAKER, PACKERS scores 0 because no letter lines up, while BREAKER scores 5.

With only four guesses, the puzzle is about choosing picks that split the wall. A word that shares many letter positions with others tells you a lot whatever its score, and once you have two or three scores you can usually test each remaining word against them and find the only one that fits. It plays a little like Mastermind with words.

There is one wall a day, numbered from the first game in October 2024, and the countdown runs to your local midnight. Past walls are in the archive, and an emoji mode swaps the words for emoji. Blunderwall is part of the byThomas set of daily games, alongside Stackronym, Toppled and VowelPlay. It is free with ads, and a one-off payment removes ads from all of them. The site still marks it as a beta.

How to play Blunderwall

  1. Look over the 16 words on the wall; one is the secret word.
  2. Tap a word to guess it.
  3. If it is wrong, read its score: how many of its letters are in the same position as in the secret word.
  4. Rule out every word that would not give the same score against your guess, and pick again.
  5. Find the secret word within four tries, then share your result or open the archive.

Tips

  • Start with a word that shares letter positions with many others on the wall; its score splits the field.
  • A score of 0 is useful: it rules out every word with a letter in the same place as your guess.
  • Check each remaining word against all your scores, not just the latest one.
  • Compare endings and beginnings first; words often line up on suffixes like -ER or -ED.
