Wick on iPhone: a solved daily round showing the word knife found in 19 guesses, beside a round still in progress

Wick is a daily guess-by-meaning word game you can play in the browser at guesswick.com or in its iPhone app. Everyone gets the same secret word each day; every guess is scored by how close it is in meaning, and you can ask Wick, the keeper of the word, yes-or-no questions. It plays in English, Spanish, French, Italian and German.

About Wick

Wick is in the family of Semantle and Contexto: the secret word is found by meaning, not spelling. You type any word and Wick ranks how close it is. Cold guesses stay icy blue, and the colour and the whole screen warm toward red as you get nearer. Each guess also tells you whether it beat your best so far, and the list of your round keeps them in order so you can see which direction is paying off.

There is one secret word a day, the same for everyone. When you are stuck you can add a question mark to put a question to Wick, the flame-shaped keeper: is it alive, is it bigger than a car. He answers honestly, remembers what you asked and never gives the word away. Asking is free. The first three hints each day are free, and when you solve it you can share your result.

Wick plays in two places. At guesswick.com the day's numbered puzzle opens straight in the browser, with practice, past puzzles, statistics and a race mode beside it, and the site can be installed as an app. The iPhone app runs the daily entirely on the phone, so it works offline, and nothing typed into it leaves the device. A Learn mode shows each guess translated into another of the five languages, which turns the daily into a small vocabulary lesson. Outside the daily there is an archive of missed puzzles, a practice mode and live duels with friends by code, which do need a connection.

Wick is made by Jason Evan Page, who publishes its source code on GitHub, and the app came out in June 2026. It is free with no account, no ads and no tracking. In the app, coins buy hints beyond the free ones and cosmetic outfits for Wick; the daily puzzle is always free.

How to play Wick

  1. Open guesswick.com and choose Today's puzzle, or open the Wick app.
  2. Type any word as a guess and see how close in meaning it is, from cold blue to hot red.
  3. Follow the warmer guesses toward related ideas.
  4. Add a question mark or type a phrase to ask Wick a yes-or-no question when you are stuck.
  5. Keep going until you find the secret word, then share your result.

Tips

  • Start with broad words from different areas (an animal, a place, a feeling) to find which one is warm.
  • Once something is warm, try close neighbours of it rather than jumping far away.
  • Ask Wick sorting questions such as whether it is alive or made by people; they are free.
  • Forms of a word count alike, so running and run score the same; do not spend guesses on variants.
